Goal

The goal of this project is to increase the reading comprehension, reading fluency, and excitement about reading of my students by allowing them to take home classroom books to read every night.

What will be done with my students

Students will be "introduced" to the characters in these book sets in class. Throughout our upcoming Language Arts modules, we will be studying strong characters that appear in fictional stories. Through this project every student will be given their own "take home book pouch" to "Carry their Characters Home" each night. Students will have the opportunity to choose a book from the new "take home library" each day. The books that were chosen for this project all feature strong, interesting characters that students will enjoy reading about and will reinforce what they are learning in class each day.

Benefits to my students

This project will make sure that all students have access to quality books that align with our curriculum to read at home. Students will be able to extend their learning and love of reading beyond the school day and they will have the opportunity to share their favorite characters and books with their families.

Describe the Students

My classroom is filled with energetic, curious seven year old students who are excited about learning. The second grade students in my classroom come from very diverse backgrounds. 14 of my 19 students receive free/reduced lunch services since we are a Title I school. I have 4 students that speak English as a second language. These students speak Spanish, Polish and Arabic and have varying levels of English proficiency. My class also includes 3 students enrolled in Exceptional Student Education programs, and 2 students enrolled in the Gifted and Talented Program.

Budget Narrative

This project will provide 20 "take home book pouches" for students to use as they "Carry Their Characters Home" each night. Through this project I will also purchase 7 different sets of books (a total of 58 books) that will create a classroom library for students to choose their "take home books" from each night.
