The garden is child friendly and the students are encouraged to pick and eat, smell, or share. Goal

The Pre-K students at Maximo Elementary help to care for their own vegetable and herb garden located on their playground. The goal of the garden is to encourage healthy eating choices, explore the life cycle, and engage in nature activities. The garden is child friendly and the students are encouraged to pick and eat, smell, or share. This garden has exposed the Pre-K students to a variety of vegetables and herbs, and has aided in the development of their senses.

What will be done with my students

The money donated will be used to get the garden going again. We need soil, seeds, and plants in order to meet our goals with the students. The students will participate 100% in prepping, planning, and planting. The students will also observe, engage, and harvest. The students will also take home any excess vegetables and herbs along with a child friendly recipe to be cooked with their family. The teachers would also like to engage in cooking and eating of the produce grown to encourage the students to make healthy eating choices.

Benefits to my students

The benefits of this garden include hands-on, developmentally appropriate science instruction, engagement with peers, building new vocabulary, and cross-curricular activities. This garden has helped add to the Pre-K teachers curriculum and engage their students with hand-on fun!

Describe the Students

Maximo Elementary is a Title 1 school and all students receive free lunch. The Pre-K Classrooms are blended with typically developing students (half the class) and ESE students(half the class).
