Goal

To help students with Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities (EBD) to have a hands on STEM learning experience that will fuel a love for learning. In addition it will help them promote appropriate communication skills as the communicate with a
"classroom partner" in a third world country far away.

What will be done with my students

This is a program that will allow our 6th grade students to expand their understanding of anatomy and the systems of organisms through hands on lessons including dissection of several organisms. In addition each student will be paired with a "classroom partner" in a third would country that will be afforded the same learning through this program and allow both students to learn from one another using technology. This aligns directly with the 6th grade science standards for life science as well as multiple language arts standards for speaking, listening and gathering to report data.

For the 7th grade students the program has similar components but they will be exploring DNA which is aligned to the Life Science unit of Heredity and Genetics they study. This too has all the curriculum provided and provided to a "classroom partner" in the third world country.

Benefits to my students

The benefits to involving my students in this program are immeasurable. First and formost my students tend to be disenchanted with learning and this hands on approach will truly engage a love of learning. In addition due to their disability many students struggle with effective communication skills. This opportunity will give our team the chance to teach them code switching skills and how to communicate professionally to share their learning with learners across the world.

This is also going to give them access to something they otherwise could not access. Our students are all from socioeconomically disadvantaged homes and could never afford to provide an opportunity like this for their students. (our school couldn't provide it either due to the high price tag).

Describe the Students

I have students at a variety of learning levels, but all are ESE either Emotionally and Behaviorally Disabled (EBD) or Other Health Impaired (OHI) and in class to receive support is social and emotional skills.

They are all come from lower socioeconomic areas and would be eligible for free and reduced lunch.

Of the students we would like to involve (13) 12 are black, and 2 are female.

Budget Narrative

The program totals per child include all the needed materials for 6th grade. When I spoke to the representative from Up Village I explained our situation and needing a grant to make the program happened so she quoted the rate of 7th grade and sent a list of other materials we would need to provide that I have listed individually with prices from local websites for the items.
