Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 20

The materials received through this generous grant has impacted my classroom in a positive way in many areas.  The most noticiable area of change is seeing the students excited to participate and engaged in the STEM lessons, projects, and experiments.  Not only are the students engaged in the hands-on activities every week, but they are recognizing the importance of the direct instruction lessons throughout each topic, because they use the skills during the related activitiy in order to participate.  Students have been less resistant to complete written observations and reflect on the daily targeted skills through journaling.  Their understandings are in more depth, they are better able to explain, and the new information is retained faster.  We find students discussing ideas, comparing knowledge, and using reasoning skills throughout each project, creating a more collaborative atmosphere in the classroom.  Each project requires students to use and practice skills across content areas sincluding Science, Math, Engineering, Technology, and Language Arts.  Because our population of students has such diverse learning styles and unique needs, this goals are often hard to accomplish with the class, as a whole.  These projects have been able to accomplish that and largely increase student learning gains.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this project is to increase students' understanding of STEM related academic lessons in the classroom through increased visual, engaging, and hands-on learning experiences. 

 

What will be done with my students

I will use the requested items to supplement my lessons in Science, infusing Math, Engineering, and Technology into the lessons. I will use items such as microscopes, magnifying glasses, etc. so the students can have hands-on learning in all areas of science. I will infuse other areas of learning; for example, Math into Science using graphing and data collection during Science Inquiry Projects.  

 

Benefits to my students

The benefit of increasing hands on materials in the classroom will ultimately be increased learning that students will retain. Students will be able to build onto their learning from the standard curriculum and have more elaborate, engaging experiences. Because my students are typically visual learners and sensory driven, these materials will allow them to learn in their individual styles. My hope is that if lessons are more engaging, they will learn to love science and math and look forward to our lessons! 

 

Describe the Students

My classroom is within an Exceptional Student Education Center, which focuses on Behavior Modification in order to increase academic learning. Our school is a Title 1, High Poverty School, with all students receiving free lunch and breakfast. I teach Middle School Students who have Autism and other Sensory Behavior needs in addition to Intellectual Delays. Also, most of my students have additional disabilities such as mental illness, emotional/behavior disorders, and health impairments. These disabilities all interfere with their ability to learn in the same way as typically developing students. My students need lessons that they will remember in order to retain and recall information being taught. 

 

Budget Narrative

I have budgeted $300 for books related to STEM projects, lessons, projects, etc. that I will use to create engaging lessons to meet State Standards laid forth. I allowed $700 for materials, tools, STEM kits and related items needed to complete designed projects. This includes the cost of 6 student microscopes and 1 classroom microscope; this microscope includes software and ability to project slides for whole class use.
