Goal

My goal for this grant is to purchase STEM-Related materials and kits for my students to use for a variety of reasons in the classroom that will develop and facilitate their interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Examples of reasons the students would use these materials include rewards, Fun Friday (end of the week positive incentive), and positive reinforcement for good work and academic excellence.

What will be done with my students

Our school has recently gotten a science lab that the students absolutely love working in. I would love to see that passion and interest carried into the classroom through a variety of construction, coding/programming, and critical thinking activities that the students can earn on a daily basis. In my vision, when a student finishes a project early, they can have the option to go build a maze for the Bee-Bots. Maybe, when they reach a goal, they can work on a Fairytale problem-solving activity with a friend. If they demonstrate strong character and good behavior they can work on the blocks and blueprints center.

Another way these materials will be utilized in my room is through passion projects. I am joining numerous other teachers at my school, and within my district in the Personalized Learning Initiative. These materials would add a really exciting opportunity for students who may be interested in demonstrating competency in science and math through a STEM-inspired project.

These types of resources can be utilized in all subject areas, making them each a great "bang-for-your-buck" resource. When students utilize them during Language Arts, they may write about the processes and ideas they used during their exploration. During math, they can demonstrate connections to current mathematical practices and standards. Use during science would allow them to apply the scientific method when problem solving.

By having multiple plans ready for these materials, I am insuring that students will have access to these items more frequently than a one-time project set-up.

Benefits to my students

By promoting creativity and problem solving within the classroom every day students will begin to learn and appreciate the value of these skills on a much deeper level. By ensuring that the students have access to personally relevant STEM activities, they may discover that science, technology, engineering and mathematics covers so much more than they previously thought.

According to the Department of Education, a student who engages with STEM develops the ability to solve tough problems, gather and evaluate evidence, and make sense of information. These skills are so critical, not only to their personal growth, but to the growth of our nation.

As a teacher of 18 students, my job is to promote a life-long love of learning. These tools really showcase how that would be possible to children.

Describe the Students

The students in my class come from mostly low income families. We are a healthy mix of ESE and General Education students. With that mix being acknowledged these students have an extremely unique range of abilities spaning across multiple areas of strengths that extend to areas outside of the traditional classroom dynamic.

Budget Narrative

All of the items I am requesting (except the Code & Go Robot Mouse Activity Set which will be purchased from learningresources.com) will be purchase from lakeshorelearning.com.
