Goal

Students will explore science and engineering through a hands-on, fun experience of building a working Ferris Wheel. They will be able to describe how models and simulations can be used to solve real-world issues in science and engineering, and be introduced to enriched activities that will promote interest in STEM careers of the future.
 

 

What will be done with my students

In small groups of three, students will use K'NEX Revolution Ferris Wheel kits to explore how models and simulations can be used to solve real-world issues in science and engineering. Students will learn how to construct a working Ferris wheel. These kits also contain a power source that will allow the kids to understand that in order for electricity to flow, you must have a closed circuit. 

 

Benefits to my students

Students will gain a deeper understanding of how science and engineering are used to solve real-world problems. This grant would provide my students with a hands-on approach that most students would otherwise be unable to experience due to cost. Building a working model of a Ferris wheel will give students a unique experience that is not currently a part of the fifth grade curriculum in Pinellas County Schools. 

 

Describe the Students

The students using the Ferris wheel models come from a diverse cultural background. We are a Title 1, high-poverty school. This grant would provide reusable materials for my two groups of fifth graders. My student demographics are: 25 boys and 20 girls. 16% of my students are ESE (Exceptional Students Education, Student with Disabilities), 11% are English Language Learners, 11% are Gifted Learners, while 51% of my students receive free/or reduced lunch.
 

 

Budget Narrative

All products and prices are from Amazon.com. Ordering 15 kits will allow for small groups of 3 students per Ferris wheel kit to ensure that all students are able to participate on this hands-on STEM project. Two orders of batteries will allow multiple uses of the Ferris wheels after they are built.
