Goal

This project will give students a true understanding of STEM concepts as they conceptualize and create solutions for the problems found in traditional fairy tales.

What will be done with my students

Students will be introduced to STEM concepts through fairy tales. Each unit will begin with the reading of a familiar fairy tale. However, as we "dig deeper" into the stories, students will be given the opportunity to problem solve and create different story endings. After reading a story, students will ponder the question, "What if..." and will be asked to think beyond the "...happily ever after".

This project will ask students to invent STEM solutions to the following 10 fairy tale problems:

-The Gingerbread Man: Students will design and create a bridge to help the Gingerbread Man escape from the fox.

-Jack and the Beanstalk: Students will design and create parachutes to help Jack get down (safely!) from the top of the beanstalk.

-Rapunzel: Students will design and create a pulley system and an/or an elevator to help Rapunzel escape from the tower.

-Hansel & Gretel: Students will design and create a trap the children will use to capture the witch.

-3 Billy Goats Gruff: Students will design and build rafts so the Billy Goats can avoid the troll who lives under the bridge.

-Goldilocks and the 3 Bears: Students will create, test and design different, sturdier furniture options for Goldilocks.

-Little Red Riding Hood: Students will design and create a zip line to send the basket of treats through the forest to Grandma's house, avoiding the Big Bad Wolf.

-Cinderella: Students will design and create their own castle for Cinderella and the prince to live in after their wedding.

-The 3 Little Pigs: Students will design and create sturdy housing options for the 3 little pigs.

-Thumbelina: Students will design and create a small plane to help Thumbelina escape after she is captured.

Benefits to my students

This project will benefit my students in so many ways! It will excite students and give them a true understanding of STEM processes and concepts. The integration of literature, math and science will help them to get a deeper understanding of "real world" applications for each subject matter.

The problem solving and inventive, "thinking outside the box" that this project requires will help students to gain confidence and take initiative as they encounter problems in their lives.

Describe the Students

My classroom is filled with energetic, curious seven year old students who are excited about learning. The second grade students in my classroom come from very diverse backgrounds. 14 of my 19 students receive free/reduced lunch services since we are a Title I school. I have 4 students that speak English as a second language. These students speak Spanish, Polish and Arabic and have varying levels of English proficiency. My class also includes 3 students enrolled in Exceptional Student Education programs, and 2 students enrolled in the Gifted and Talented Program.

Budget Narrative

The items that are being purchased through this project will provide the materials that students will use to draft, build and test the "solutions" they invent to solve common fairy tale problems. These materials will give students hands on building and basic engineering experiences.
