Goal

The goal for the Study Island project is to improve student achievement on SSA (FCAT) science testing through use of Study Island.

What will be done with my students

I have used Study Island in the past as a supplement to what I do in the classroom. The web-based program lets students work at their own pace, reinforcing the science standards. My kids can review the content taught in class and take quizzes with questions similar to what they'd see on the assessments given by the district and state (i.e. SSA). Based on formative assessments given in class, I also assign students certain sections where they need remediation. I do this because I want them all to be able to demonstrate mastery. Students I've had in the past also use this as a tool to prepare for my unit tests. They told me it really helps them study, which is why I am applying for this grant!

Benefits to my students

Students are able to demonstrate mastery of topics even after we have moved past those topics in class. Study Island supports the learning process and builds off my students’ enthusiasm for technology with engaging, interactive lessons and activities. The content is based on the Florida State Standards and Common Core Standards, and provides students the ability to study, remediate, and practice for state testing. Instruction is differentiated with immediate feedback, built-in remediation, and actionable, real-time progress reports. I can assign lessons and students will work on them over vacations so they don't lose anything over the breaks. I love that I can assign certain sections based on individual needs, run data reports, and modify my instruction in class based on scores. The fact that it's web-based and easy to use allows me to reinforce key academic concepts anytime, anywhere.

Describe the Students

My students have a desire to learn. We are a title one school with the majority of our population being African American. I teach all academic levels. My students vary from low to high performers and all deserve the chance to meet their full potential.
