Goal

The goal of this grant is to provide financial assistance to those adult education students in need. This grant would afford those students the opportunity to take all four subject exams of the GED at no cost. Those students who earn a passing score on all four subject exams will earn their GED.

What will be done with my students

Many of our students enrolled in our GED program are unemployed and/or are the sole provider for their family members. Many of our students are unable to afford the total cost of all four subject exams (total for all four subjects is $128; $32 for each subject).

Benefits to my students

As instructors in this program, we are very encouraging and supportive of our adult students. We know that many students must overcome many obstacles to even get to class in order to work towards taking each subject exam. For these students who do overcome those obstacles to complete their work, we would like to be able to continue to support and encourage them by removing this last financial obstacle of them having to pay $128.

Describe the Students

Many of our students enrolled in our Dixie Hollins Adult Education Center satellite program at Salvation Army have many obstacles to overcome. Some are as young as 16 with no work experience or parental support. Some are residents at the Salvation Army who are in the process of completing a rehabilitation program and have chosen to work towards their GED. Others have lost their job to due to the fact that they have not yet received their high school diploma, which has left them and their families in a financial hardship. We, as instructors, believe that all students, no matter what hardships they are facing in their personal lives, have the ability to succeed and move forward to be positive, contributing members of society.
