The goal of this grant request is to provide 40 Fifth Grade STEM Academy students with the opportunity to build hydraulic powered remote-controlled arms. The students will experience every aspect of the Engineering Design Process, and along the way, gain valuable skills in collaborative work and strategic problem solving. And because these are reusable kits, my STEM Academy students will benefit for years to come!

Goal

The goal of this grant request is to provide 40 Fifth Grade STEM Academy students with the opportunity to build hydraulic powered remote-controlled arms. The students will experience every aspect of the Engineering Design Process, and along the way, gain valuable skills in collaborative work and strategic problem solving. And because these are reusable kits, my STEM Academy students will benefit for years to come! 

 

What will be done with my students

Students will work in pairs.
Students will research hydraulic power, and report on how and where hydraulic power is used; including possible STEM career options to utilize this skill.
Teams will then design their own unique hydraulic powered, remote-controlled arm. In this process, students will work through the Engineering Design Process in designing, testing and revising their prototypes.
Because they are working from a kit with endless combinations and can also used our own recycled materials, each hydraulic arm can be one-of-a-kind.
Students will compare and contrast the designs.
Students will invent and test certain tasks for the hydraulic arms.
 

 

Benefits to my students

In our STEM Academy, students can benefit in so many ways from this activity!
Students will utilize creativity, critical thinking and problem solving skills while working collaboratively with a teammate.
Students will gain knowledge about simple machines and fluid power, which aligns with Florida State Science Standards.
Students will ignite their passion for STEM careers and will go on to middle school and high school with high interest in STEM course work.

 

 

Describe the Students

I teach two after school STEM Academies for Fifth Graders. My students are evenly divided between boys and girls. My Academies include a diverse group of students from every achievement level, and in the past has included students with 504 plans and IEPs. We are just now in the application process; classes will be assigned by the first week of October. I have taught the 5th Grade STEM Academy for 4 years now; typically we have over 80 applicants for the 40 spots, so we always have a waiting list.

If my request is funded, we will order the materials through our school secretary/bookkeeper.
