Goal

The goal of this grant is to have the entire North Shore Elementary school to participate in a shared reading experience. We will include students and their families as well as the entire school staff. We are encouraging literacy across the board.

What will be done with my students

Super-Secret! That is what it is! We will keep the title of our book top secret until our big reveal at an assembly for students and families. The entire staff and every family at our school will receive a copy of our book. Each night during our event parents will re aloud one chapter to their child, approximately 15 minutes of reading. Older students can read to their parents. A scheduled will be created for families to follow so no one falls behind. They will receive questions to ask their child, topics to discuss, and a list of words that may be challenging for the students. Each morning we will have a trivia question that will be asked on the Morning Announcements. When a student gets the trivia question correct they will be rewarded with an item that relates to the book. Many other activities will be available for students to participate in throughout the event. Examples may include Poetry Walks, music related to topic, painting related to topic, etc. At the end of the book we will have an event that wraps up our book. Parents, students and staff will all be invited to celebrate our school wide literacy!

Budget Narrative

North Shore Elementary has proven their commitment to the One School, One Book program by purchasing a life time membership to One School, One Book - Read to Them organization. The $500 membership provides the school with book discounts, program ideas for books, ideas for communicating with parents, trivia questions, discussion topics, activities, vital support and much more. This will be North Shores inaugural year. We need funds to purchase the books for each family and staff member, money for prizes for trivia questions, funds to decorate the school and funds to provide a memorable culminating activity for students and parents. In the chosen book the main character, a quite charming creature, loves to read, play chess, paint, write, listen to classical music, and eat a very delectable dessert! The OSOB committee at North Shore would like to have a culminating activity for parents and students that incorporate all these activities!
