What will be done with my students

Each year our fourth grade class participates in an economics fair where they are required to create a small business. in addition to creating the products that students will sell during on Market Day, students learn about basic economics, budgeting, goods and services, supply and demand, marketing/advertising, and decision making skills for their business . On economics fair day the students use their classroom money earned during the school year to purchase products of their choice from each shop.

Access to a Swivl C Series robot and use of their school assigned iPad will provide our students with a tool to help create exciting, informative and fun advertisements for their products and shop. These advertisements are shown prior to economics fair day once students pay and airtime fee.

Benefits to my students

Students will learn how effective marketing strategies can draw customers in to their products. Market day provides them with an opportunity to become their own boss and engage in real world decision making scenarios that business owners encounter each day. These skills encourage innovative thinking and real world scenarios as they move forward and dream about what type of career they would like to pursue in their future.

Describe the Students

Our grade level consists of a diverse range of student ethnicity. We have students that have German, Polish, Indian, Colombian, and Brazilian background. There are two ESOL students who both come from homes where their parents primary language is not English. Most of our students come from middle class homes, but we do have some from very low socioeconomic backgrounds. We have quite a few students who are ESE ranging from visually impaired to Autism Spectrum Disorder. While we have a wide range of students, one thing is in common- they all love to learn and work hard to gain knowledge and work towards success.

Budget Narrative

These grant funds will be used to purchase the Swivl C Series robot, a carrying case for protection in travel on campus, and a wide angle video lens in order to accommodate the needs of more than two students in the video frame. After some research Amazon.com provided the best prices.
