The purpose of this grant is to encourage student opportunities to explain their conceptual thinking while creating a hands-on product. This avenue of self-expression will encourage, focus and engage students in the K-5 classrooms. Through this creativity, students will be exposed to language development by building vocabulary and conceptual thinking through oral language. Students will have to explain their thinking to their peers and gain self-confidence in the process. As they gain confidence in oral delivery, students will segue into written expression of their creations. As a result, they will develop a deeper understanding of themselves and ways of communicating in their own world.

What will be done with my students

Students will develop a concept (idea), a skill or a vocabulary set by creating through the medium of their own play-doh. They will explain their thinking to their peers. This oral practice, and later writing skills enhancement, will help the reading and writing process throughout Midtown Elementary. The play-doh will also help to foster a feeling of fun. This is a new Pinellas County School on the South side of St Petersburg. Students need to explore many avenues of learning in order to feel successful. These building experiences and hands on creations will motivate students to utilize and explain their creative thinking.

Benefits to my students

As a gifted teacher in a Title 1 school, I teach talent and development in K-5. Students will benefit from short creative lessons as I visit them weekly to explore new avenues of creativity. The goal is to build the gifted and talent and development program.

Midtown Academy is a new Pinellas County School that opened its doors in August 2016. Last year as a charter school it was rated an ‘F’. Many of these students are still in this school. Students need opportunities to learn in engaging and varied ways.

Describe the Students

It is crucial for students to build hands-on projects in school that will help build life-long learning skills, communication and complexity of thinking. Allowing students to engage in their own play-doh creations will build confidence, share thinking and collaboration. These skills are essential for students to be successful in a global world. The creations can be shared with others through a display of ideas helping to build a classroom culture. All 250 (approx) students in elementary will be impacted. High and low performing students are included in this project.

Budget Narrative

I have shopped for these items. Mainly on Amazon.com for the best prices.
Each student needs to have 2 pieces of play doh. The tools can be shared by each class and rotated through the school.
The paper and printer cartridge will be helpful in terms of displaying student creations for all to see school-wide. Thank you so much for your kind consideration.
