The context of the IB program focuses on international education and creating cultural awareness to develop students into citizens of the world. The acquisition of a foreign language at an early age is encouraged and supported as early as Preschool and as students progress through Middle School, they are provided with opportunities to collaborate with others internationally - essential to life in the 21st century. The purpose of this grant is to give students the opportunity to use technology to stimulate, motivate and attract their attention during the instructional process. My goal is to create inquiry groups in my classroom that use technology tools to increase their fluency in Spanish language and conduct open-ended inquiry and real-life investigations.

What will be done with my students

I have only seven computers in my classroom and only seven students can work at a time. I want to create lessons with an inquiry-based approach and design a process that would scaffold thinking from the know to the unknown, from shallow to deep. I will measure our success in achieving the programs' goals in giving a pre-test and post-test to students. For some tasks, technology can provide distinct advantages over more traditional approaches. The Kindle Fire is a great tool for helping children learn Spanish interactively.

Benefits to my students

Utilizing Kindle Fire in the classroom will allow the teacher:
To implement the National Standards
To use challenging authentic resources.
To infuse technology effectively with student learning.
To develop the language skills of speaking and listening.
To more easily provide individual attention to students.
To provide opportunities for students to work independently.
To provide enrichment as well as remediation.
To allow students to do research.
To provide students multiple and varied opportunities to acquire a second language.
To allow multiple levels to be taught at the same time.

Describe the Students

I have the pleasure to teach PK-5 Spanish to IB PYP students. Many of my students come from difficult home lives, but when they walk through the door, they are excited to be at school so that they can learn! We will use the Kindle Fires to target students’ Spanish literacy skills, their oral language, phonological awareness and comprehension skills and plan on accomplishing this by using Spanish educational apps, many of which are free. Every new Kindle comes with a built-in dictionary that we can use to translate new vocabulary. It’s always good to take notes while reading a book, especially when learning a new language, but it doesn’t always have to be on paper. While reading any Kindle book my students can highlight words and sections or even add notes.
There are many ways to use this feature for language learning.  Here are a few ideas:
- Build a vocabulary list simply by highlighting words
- Add notes to words and phrases as reminders for future study
- Share new words you spotted with your fellow students
- Add short summaries to chapters and paragraphs to remember the story

Budget Narrative

I am requesting 8 Kindle Fire tablets. The prices differ and that's why it is up to the Foundation to choose the brand and the price. I would as well accept used tablets that are functional and can be used to utilize modern software for foreign language. The price of $480 is an estimate of the cost.
