Would love an easel for my gathering area which is the heart of our learning environment in my 2nd grade classroom. An easel is essential for the teacher in order to lead strong mini-lessons in reading, writing, and math. An easel provides a place to demonstrate student/teacher thinking as well as critical writing skills. Students are gathered in a cozy meeting area surrounded by our library, the easel is a key piece needed to foster learning.

Goal

Would love an easel for my gathering area which is the heart of our learning environment in my 2nd grade classroom. An easel is essential for the teacher in order to lead strong mini-lessons in reading, writing, and math. An easel provides a place to demonstrate student/teacher thinking as well as critical writing skills. Students are gathered in a cozy meeting area surrounded by our library, the easel is a key piece needed to foster learning.

What will be done with my students

Students come to the gathering area multiple times a day for direct instruction of mini-lessons. Students are physically close to the teacher and each other, which fosters a supportive learning community. The easel is beside the teacher and used for modeling various kinds of writing. Personal stories, opinion, and informational writing are demonstrated on chart paper on the easel. When the teacher becomes the writer in full view of the class it is powerful. Students also use the easel to record their thinking at times with post it notes which allows us to have great conversations. Anchor charts are created in front of students on an easel and these charts are referred to by students often during their independent work time.

Benefits to my students

You just can't have an effective meeting place without an easel. The current easel I have had for 10 years and is too small for my chart paper to fit on. Leading strong mini-lessons in front of students who are gathered at your feet is a wonderful way to reach young children. Thinking aloud, recording student and teacher thinking on chart paper, and modeling explicit writing skills can not be done without an easel to support you.

Describe the Students

I have 15 students that come from various socioeconomic backgrounds. One student is non English speaking and picture support and modeling directly in front of him will be critical for his learning.
