One of Tyrone Middle School’s goal is to ensure that students are prepared for college, career and life and by doing so we must expose the future generations to technology and prepare them for jobs that haven’t yet been created since technology has a rapidly changing landscape. There are many opportunities to utilize technology in the classroom. As such, I am asking for help to purchase kindles for assessments and self-reflecting which would be impacting over 138 students.

What will be done with my students

In my classes, students are using various software applications including Socrative and Kahoot to take daily assessments. These tools provide instant feedback and allow them to self-reflect on learning goals. After completing a lesson, the students take a quick quiz and reflect on what was learned. Students that would benefit from additional resources to master the lesson are provided easy access to the relevant information on the kindle. The students are able to monitor their own learning and see what part of the standard they struggle with, which is a Marzano strategy aligned to the Florida Standards.
The students are able to conduct their online notebooks through OneDrive which allows them access anywhere they go. Students will be able to collaborate with others on certain projects and presentations and provide me the chance to see their work in real time while giving immediate feedback. Being able to have accessible technology will allow my students to also do research including finding current news articles.
In addition to software and data access, the kindles help students requiring translation of notes and dictionaries. I have dozens of students that are English Language Leaners and some have very limited English comprehension. The kindles offer a wonderful resource - students can read versions of the notes in their native language and English side by side with access to a dictionary. This can help their grades in science as well as reinforce fundamentals of the English language. Tyrone Middle School has been a part of the Tyrone Gardens Community in St. Petersburg for nearly 60 years. Our Tyrone Team serves approximately 900 families, from 25 different countries (including, Cuba, Vietnam, El Salvador, Venezuela, Mexico, Honduras, Syria, Puerto Rico, Italy, Eritrea, Colombia, Albania, Ukraine, Spain, Russian Federation, Philippines, Latvia, Greece, Ghana, Dominican Republic, Cambodia, Bulgaria, Bangladesh, and Zimbabwe). Tyrone Middle School is a title 1 school with over 90% of our students on free and reduced lunch.

Benefits to my students

Together, we can bridge the gap and provide technology for the students to access online assessments, utilize note taking with interactive online notebooks, find science research opportunities and enable our ELL students with tools for success.
