The goal of this grant is to teach students who struggle with behavior in the school environment to become their own super hero. Many students especially students with special needs and students from low socio-economic backgrounds, come to school lacking some of the basic social skills that are necessary for success. This curriculum will fill in those gaps to help each student learn and grow both academically and socially.

Goal

The goal of this grant is to teach students who struggle with behavior in the school environment to become their own super hero. Many students especially students with special needs and students from low socio-economic backgrounds, come to school lacking some of the basic social skills that are necessary for success. This curriculum will fill in those gaps to help each student learn and grow both academically and socially.

What will be done with my students

Students will meet with specialists such as the school counselor, school social worker, behavior specialist, or school psychologist weekly for individualized social skills instruction. They will learn how to become SuperFlexible thinkers and how to problem-solve both at school and in the community. This curriculum teaches students to identify and understand their feeling and how to overcome social obstacles that prevent them from achieving success.

Benefits to my students

This curriculum will assist our student service providers in building students self-esteem and increasing their ability to navigate socially in the school setting. The curriculum and materials purchased with this grant will be utilized to provide direct social skills instruction to students in grades Pre-K through 5th. The materials are appropriate for both students with disabilities as well as students served in the general education setting.

Describe the Students

Anona Elementary serves Pre-K through 5th grade students. Approximately 50% of our students are considered economically disadvantaged. In addition, we serve 4 classes of students on the autism spectrum as well as students with a variety of other disabilities such as varying exceptionalities, speech/language impaired, and/or other health impaired. Historically, our students with disabilities is our lowest performing subgroup.
