Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 12

The generosity of this donation to buy these sensory items has had an amazingly positive impact in my classroom.  The students were overjoyed when the package arrived and they were able to explore the various types of sensory input.  Each student has found their "favorite fidgets" and they are being used daily by the students.  I have seen an increase in focus dudring lessons and a decrease in the need for movement.   The students are provided 5 minute sensory breaks following each subject area.  We created a sensory room in the classroom, where students can calm down, rest, or take a break.  This room is utilized often and reduces escalation of behaviors.  Because of the reduction in disruptive behavior and my students increased focus to lessons, I have seen my students show progress in all acadamia.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to increase instructional time and attention to task and decrease challenging behaviors by satisfying sensory needs of students.

What will be done with my students

I will use these items to provide a calming, sensory area for students to access within the classroom and provide individual sensory supports to each student during academic instruction.

Benefits to my students

By satisfying the students' need for sensory input, challenging behaviors related to sensory issues will decrease in the room. This will increase my time spent instructing the students and, therefore, increase student learning gains. All students and adults within the classroom will benefit from this.

Describe the Students

My classroom consists of students who are presented with Autism/Sensory Disorders as well as Intellectual Delays. My students are low performers for a variety of reasons (support needs, understanding the material, and having challenging behaviors). They attend a center school outside of the typical setting and require more academic and behavioral support than can be provided at the typical middle school.

Budget Narrative

All of these items will help students fulfill their need for sensory input. The items will help create a calming space for students that they can access within the classroom. Fidgets will help students keep their hands busy during instructional time to help them maintain focus on what is being taught.
