As the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) Coach at THE Boca Ciega High School, I am a member of the Student Achievement Squad. Our primary goal is to identify students in need of more targeted help to be successful and graduate high school. Part of the task will be determining ways to motivate the students as well as create incentives for them to do better. My goal in writing this grant proposal is create a field trip incentive program to offer to 50 of our at-risk students.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 0

Due to time constraints, I was unable to utilize the funds from this grant. I did not realize how hectic the testing schedule is in a high school in May!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

As the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) Coach at THE Boca Ciega High School, I am a member of the Student Achievement Squad. Our primary goal is to identify students in need of more targeted help to be successful and graduate high school. Part of the task will be determining ways to motivate the students as well as create incentives for them to do better. My goal in writing this grant proposal is create a field trip incentive program to offer to 50 of our at-risk students.

What will be done with my students

Students will be eligible if they hit certain measurable goals they will create for themselves. This field trip will take place in May, but the eligibility period will begin mid-March as we determine which students have consistently hit their goal(s) each quarter. The goals will vary by student as their issues are different but will be in one or more of the following areas: percentage of attendance, grade point average, and/or discipline incidents. If students improve in these areas, their achievement increases because they are in the classroom receiving instruction!

I would like to take the students to Weedon Island Preserve to do a guided kayak tour of the mangroves and the bay. During this tour, the Sweetwater Kayak Rentals staff provide detailed information about the ecosystems present and the rich history of water in those locations and how that water impacts Tampa Bay as a whole

Benefits to my students

As the Outdoor Afro leader for the Saint Pete/Tampa Bay Network, I have seen the healing power of this location. Grown adults find this natural space awe-inspiring, and I think it would be highly beneficial to these students as well. They are struggling to care enough about high school graduation for various reasons. This nature field trip would be a motivator because they would get a break from being on campus, but what is more important, they may develop a passion for outdoor spaces.

Additionally, their bay awareness and education can impact the community in several ways. The best case scenario would be that these students are inspired enough to become scientists or engineers. If that does not happen, the fact remains that these students will learn about the importance of our waterways and spread that knowledge to their families and friends while being awarded for working so hard at achieving their goals that will lead to graduation!

Describe the Students

This will impact a variety of high school students, grades 9 through 12. Through the data pulls throughout the years and with teacher in put, I will determine which students are at-risk.

Budget Narrative

The main financial need is transportation and the cost of the tour. While it is local, this project is costly because of the cost to get students to preserve as well as to pay for the guided tour.
