Goal

The goal of this grant is to bridge the gap between class work and homework as well as to provide students with age and content appropriate non-fiction text’s to read at home with their family.

What will be done with my students

Students will be provided with a weekly homework packet that will include one copy of the Let’s Find Out and Science Spin Magazines. Students will be asked to read the magazine with their family, for support, and then complete a number of activities using the print rich text. Activities include but are not limited to: highlighting letters they know, circling sight words, writing stories about the article content and illustrating and labeling images from the text.

These publications do a great job of following the Kindergarten curriculum as well as highlighting the seasons and holidays. Both magazines will allow for students to have non-fiction texts to refer to in their home.

Each magazine comes with a poster that we will laminate and use in the classroom in writing center, in science and to complement language arts curriculum.

Benefits to my students

If students have a collection of books at their house they are fiction texts that they can read and explore. 99% of our students only experience non-fiction texts at the Library or in their classrooms in school. Funding this grant will provide each student with 32 issues of the Let’s Find Out magazine and 8 copies of the Science Spin magazine to read and interact with. The magazines are Kindergarten appropriate and have proven to be an excellent resource for Non-Fiction text. Students will explore 32 different topics over the course of the year. Not only will they be asked to read the text as part of their homework, they will have a number of conversations with their families in regards to the text content. It is my hope that these conversations become routine and will assist students and parents in seeing a classroom to home connection with the Kindergarten Curriculum.

Describe the Students

Our 2016-2017 student rosters have not been created at this point. Based on previous class data, our self-contained K population contain a diverse group of learners: some high performers, some average performing students and some struggling students. Our classrooms may contain some ESE population that includes speech-impaired, language impaired, and vision impaired students along with ESOL students. 34% of our 544 students received free or reduced lunch in the 2015-2016 school year.

Budget Narrative

The money will be used to purchase 25 subscriptions of both the Let's Find Out Magazine and the Science Spin Magazine.
The lamination film will be used to laminate the posters that come along with the subscriptions to keep in our classroom.
