Goal

Pinellas County has mandated that students receive 55 minutes weekly of activity outside of Physical Education class. We would like to simplify the process for our classroom teachers by providing equipment for the activities.

What will be done with my students

Teachers will be encouraged to do brain breaks or activity breaks with there students throughout the day. This activity is outside of recess and P.E.. The goal is for the breaks to be organized. We will be providing a District Wide Training in August to all grade levels. The teachers will receive a lesson plan that will include standards, resources for activities & activity suggestions. Then we will present a power point on the importance of Health Education Physical Activity / Brain Breaks.
We will demonstrate activities to assist teachers in offering quick activity breaks throughout the day. It can be in the room or outdoors for 5 minutes or longer, depending on the classroom schedule. It can be movement breaks, content movement or technology breaks such as Go Noodle. We want teachers to instill in students "the more they burn the better they learn."

Benefits to my students

The benefits of these breaks are numerous. Our main target is obesity and increasing students capability to learn with daily activity breaks. According to The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, thirty three percent of children in the United States are obese. That statistic is increasing with the overuse of technology, diets rich in fast food and the reduction of daily P.E.
The Alliance lists several reasons why physical activity is important throughout the day. It is proven to increase the ability to learn. After an activity break students are twenty percent more likely to earn an A in Math or English. Improves self esteem, inactive students equal inactive adults. Inactivity can lead to health issues.

Describe the Students

A fundamental school is an elementary school ( K-5) whose purpose is to provide traditional, standard based education for its students. The emphasis is on providing a rigorous academic program and on developing responsibility and independence in each students.
Our students are very driven. We are an A school which indicates that our students are high achievers. Our environment is very fast paced academically, parental involvement at monthly PTA meetings is mandatory and we have a strict dress code. We have minimal behavior issues due to the structure and consistent enforcement of our school wide rules. It is a wonderful environment to work and learn in.
Due to the rigorous academic schedule activity breaks are much needed. Our students work very hard daily, pausing and giving them time to refuel will help reduce stress and increase focus for the next round of instruction.

Budget Narrative

The budget is based on equipment for 25 classroom teachers. This equipment will be available to them for classroom activity breaks/recess. They will keep the equipment in their rooms for easy accessibility. It is our goal as the physical education staff to support the classroom teachers in their quest to make activity breaks a consistent part of the students day.
