My goal is to CELEBRATE the amazing stories of my young writers in my class. Their words are important and their writing is like GOLD. By providing my first grade students with hardcover books that include primary lined paper and a place to sketch a picture above, they can feel like real authors who have their very own chapter books filled with the stories of their lives. The students in my class have been working hard daily on building their writing muscles and skills. The end of the school year provides us the freedom to try out all the great techniques we have learned as writers over the year. With hardback books to work in, they can write personal stories, poems, and informational stories about things they love. This would be an amazing keepsake filled with their words. We will be having an end of year celebration to share with others all their amazing stories they have written. Having these hardback books would promote a love of writing and motivation to continue writing in them over the summer. I know my students will feel so PROUD to have their very own books.

What will be done with my students

Starting in April we will have the ability to begin reviewing all the great writing styles we've learned over the school year. My first grade writers have learned how to produce realistic fiction stories, poems, personal narrative stories, as well as informational stories to teach others about a topic they love. I will be allowing them to work on these various types of writing in their hardback books and illustrating them. I know they will take such pride in their work and they will feel so SPECIAL to have these to work in. In May, I will be hosting a writing celebration in my class where parents and faculty are invited to come hear some of their great published stories.

Benefits to my students

There are so many benefits to providing my students with these hardback books to write in. Children need to see themselves as real writers and it's my job as their teacher to build them up. Publishing stories in their Bare Books will strengthen their self-confidence and create life long writers. Something special like this can instill a love of writing for a life time. It may be a memory I can create and something they can hold onto forever. Writing can be magical, but it is not magic. Writing is a skill that takes lots of daily deliberate practice and hard work. I am so fortunate to have seen the beautiful feelings, thoughts, and stories that have come from my first grade students over the last 15 years. I believe in them and what they can do. They are writers.

Describe the Students

I am in a Title One school where all students can receive free breakfast, lunch, and dinner if needed. I am one of two first grade ESE classrooms. Many of my students receive special support services. I know they would treasure a hardback book of their very own writing.
