Goal

To increase the number of books read each month by students who are in reading classes.

What will be done with my students

Each month, students will be celebrated for completing independent reading. Students must successfully pass a Reading Counts quiz for the month or write a detailed summary of the book if a Reading Counts quiz is unavailable. Teachers will use the same writing rubric for the summary to guarantee consistency in expectations. The gift cards and earbuds will be earned by students who have exceeded reading a book a month at their level.

Benefits to my students

Research suggests that readers grow by being engaged in level-appropriate independent reading regularly. Furthermore, many researchers are convinced that reading volume, rather than oral language, is the prime contributor to individual differences in children’s vocabularies (Hayes, 1988;
Hayes & Ahrens, 1988; Nagy & Anderson, 1984;
Nagy & Herman, 1987; Stanovich, 1986). It is our goal to for these students to see themselves as readers and becoming proficient, confident readers.

Describe the Students

Of the students who are participating in the program, 0% of them passed FSA or FCAT in the spring of last year. 73% of these students are among the L35s.

Budget Narrative

Each celebration will be held monthly for eligible students in all reading classes. Each monthly celebration will have a theme and new books will be showcased for students to peruse for future reading. Books will also be showcased to reflect students' interests as well as upcoming events/holidays.
