Goal

We want to create Observe, Think, and Question Inquiry Boxes to actively engage our students in hands-on inquiry opportunities.

What will be done with my students

We will create Observe, Think, and Question Inquiry Boxes that will include cultural and historical artifacts. These artifacts will be the spring board for further in-depth student inquiry that will focus on students using their background knowledge, carefully observing the artifact, thinking about what the artifact is used for, and create questions to elicit further investigations.

Benefits to my students

Inquiry instruction is one of the most critical thinking skills that we need to foster in our students. By actively engaging in the inquiry process through the use of artifacts, our students will be able to transfer these valuable inquiry skills into every other discipline area throughout the school day. Students will be able to have a sense of ownership over their own learning. This project will also engage our student's curiosity and imagination skills.

Describe the Students

Our school is an International Studies School and are in the process of receiving International Baccalaureate (IB) accreditation. In order to make our students more international-minded individuals, we need to integrate and develop international-mindedness within our community of learners. An IB school ensures that learning is engaging, relevant, challenging, and significant within a transdisciplinary model and through structured inquiry experiences. We are also a Title 1 school. A majority of our students come from economically disadvantaged homes and have not had the opportunities to experience cultural differences outside of the school environment.
