The goal for this idea is to show students sound will change when the length and shape of pipes are varied. We will use the Science of sound and the Engineering and Math of different creations to learn how the sound will change from high to low and from fast frequencies to slow frequencies.

Goal

The goal for this idea is to show students sound will change when the length and shape of pipes are varied. We will use the Science of sound and the Engineering and Math of different creations to learn how the sound will change from high to low and from fast frequencies to slow frequencies.

What will be done with my students

Students will get a variety of PVC pipes from the local hardware store and begin constructing sound shapes with PVC connectors. The connectors can be straight or curved. The length and shapes will affect the highness and lowness of the sound. The more they change their design, the more the pitch with change. The sound can be created by producing air through the tubes (like a woodwind instrument) or by playing the tubes with a mallet (like a percussion instrument.) After individual designs have been built, students will work in small groups to either connect and build larger instruments or to build rhythms and beats to create musical band compositions.

Benefits to my students

Students have a difficult understanding the concept of sound. My idea is a way for them to be the creator and experience different designs to hear those sounds.

Describe the Students

Our 4th grade and 5th grade classes are general education students. We have an ASD unit of 4th and 5th graders as well. Our ESE students are mainstreamed with the general population and are about 20% of the classes.

Budget Narrative

I will use the budget to purchase a variety of sizes, widths and lengths of PVC pipes at the local hardware store so that every child can create their own design and connect for small group designs creating instruments.

Items

# Item Cost
1 PVC tubes varying in length $225.00
2 PVC pipes varying in width $125.00
3 PVC connecting pipes curved $75.00
4 PVC connecting pipes straight $75.00
  Total: $500.00
