Goal

The students will work with a library volunteer to build, plant and maintain two mobile outdoor garden planters for fresh herbs and veggies to use in our cafe, the ReFresh Cafe

What will be done with my students

Students will use hand tools and building supplies to follow the directions and build two planters. Then the students will fill with garden soil and plant the herbs and veggies. The students will follow up with maintenance of the plants and using them for cooking.

Benefits to my students

Our students will benefit from an opportunity to work hands on with a library volunteer to use hand tools to build the planter. I have several students this year that would really enjoy this activity. The gardening and maintenance of the planter garden will enhance our homemade soups and salads, as well as, provide an interesting visit to the patio outside our cafe for fresh snips of herbs or watering the plants.

Describe the Students

My classroom is 10 Extended Transition students. They are 19-22 years old and have earned their Special Diplomas from their High Schools. They choose to continue to be in school for Employability and Independent Living Skills. My students are interested in working in the Food Industry and are learning cooking and food handling skills, as well as, customer service and stocking skills.

Budget Narrative

We will not need to purchase any tools, the volunteer is willing to pre-cut and pre-drill the holes.
