My Gifted students need a saltwater aquarium and supplies to have a classroom marine habitat. Have you ever visited an aquarium and been filled with awe and wonder by simply watching the beautiful fish gracefully swim around in their tank? With the nearest aquarium located hours away, some of the students in our class have never seen marine life up-close. We would like to have a Salt Water tank that would give our Gifted students a hands-on skills that are necessary for the 21st century workplace. The tools we purchase will allow them to think critically and creatively. Our goal is to reach children who are underrepresented (girls and minorities) in STEM fields. Early introduction to STEM will encourage my students to consider STEM careers and take the necessary science and math courses in middle and high school. Using hands-on activities students will bring science in Gifted class to life!

Goal

What will be done with my students

Our thematic Gifted unit we are studying this year in our Gifted program is Oceanography. This enrichment project will provide a daily aquarium experience for students who may not otherwise visit an aquarium. Through the daily routine of caring for and observing our classroom fish, students will learn responsibility and respect for all life forms. They will also learn that living things need more than just food and water for survival. As a part of our Science STEM program, our Gifted students will record, predict, evaluate, measure, and experiment with this hands-on learning opportunity.

Benefits to my students

The best way to capitalize on my student’s natural curiosity is to offer them more interactive hands-on learning opportunities based on real-world scenarios. “Equipped with his five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls the adventure Science”.Like real scientists my students will use these materials/products, including balances, scales, and aprons, to make measurements, collect data, perform tests and analyze data. I like the fact that these materials/products are flexible, they can be adapted for different grades/abilities. When teaching children from kindergarten to fifth grade, finding appropriate tools geared to a diverse population can be challenging. I am planning to use these materials/products with non-fiction literature which align with the Next Generation Science Standards, as well as the Florida Gifted Frameworks Standards to encourage my Gifted students to solve real-world problem through science, technology, engineering, art and math. We can use these measuring tools to measure water from the fish tank, measure the fish, and measure the growth of our edible plants.

Describe the Students

My students are caring and hard-working and try their best to collaborate to make school enriching and fun. The Gifted program is considered exceptional education and the students are high performing special needs students. Our students have an Educational Plan (similar to an IEP) which requires them to have Gifted pull-out services provided once a week. Gifted students require a little more social needs and challenging activities to keep them motivated with learning. That is where the Gifted program comes in. They come to me once a week and are expected to be challenged and enriched through hands-on learning experiences. Our teachers and principals are committed to providing students with 21st century skills. I teach between two different title I schools. At both of these schools, we will have many things to do over the year, but our greatest endeavors will be to face each day with a growth mindset to remind us all that our goals are attainable when we are focused and persistent. We will also work hard to create a positive school culture that nurtures students intellectually, socially and physically.

Budget Narrative

With this grant, I am asking for two 14 gallon biocube tanks complete with salt, live sand-40 lbs(enough for two tanks), 2 sets of ph test strips, 2 nitrate testing kits, 2 hydrometers(To measure the salinity in the water) 2 algae scrappers, 2 magnet cleaners, 2 siphone vacuum hoses, (for cleaning and maintaining the tank), 2 canisters of marine life granuel food, and 4 different types of hermit crabs for each salt water tank. I am asking for two of everything becuase I am a shared Gifted program teacher between two schools and would like to provide this Science learning opportunity for both Gifted centers/Schools.
