Goal

As a budding IB Primary Years Programme school we are all about digging into ALL our subject areas, but our students LOVE science! This grant will provide us with the materials for two classrooms to really "dig" in to our standards and enhance our learning.

What will be done with my students

Students will use the materials for hands on, engaging explorations into the world of seeds, simple machines and erosion. They will work individually and in small groups to complete exciting activities in all three areas. They will engage in ongoing conversations about what they discover and how their explorations helped them to understand our standards. As they invesitgate seeds students will design, build, test and optimize a model plant pollinator. During our machines exploration students will investigate the power of levers, wedges, inclined planes, pulleys, screws, and more to connect science with real-world applications and students will also explore wave power and design a model to protect the beach from erosion.

Benefits to my students

Students will work cooperatively to build models, experience real-life applications and learn to design solutions for problems in the world around them. They will dig deep to investigate and this will increase the rigor of our science curriculum.

Describe the Students

We are a Title 1 school that is becoming an IB Primary Years Programme magnet school. Our students are a diverse group of curious second graders. Many of them receive free and reduced breakfast and lunch and are economically challenged.

Budget Narrative

Materials come from ETA Hand 2 Mind. They include a seed exploration kit, a simple machines kit and a shrinking shore kit. They support our science benchmarks.
