Goal

To increase engagement in hands-on, outdoor activities that are place-based and relevant to real-life experience.

What will be done with my students

The Pre-K team at Maximo Elementary is preparing for their gardening project. Along with this project, Ms. Henry will be preparing a sound exploration station on the playground, adjacent to the garden. The students will be provided opportunities daily to actively engage in the garden through observation, activities, and play. The sound exploration station is intended to be an active, free exploration space for the students to explore during outdoor play. The students will learn about the sounds that objects and natural elements make together.

Benefits to my students

This project will be an ongoing project that will enhance the education of the students in Pre-K this school year, as well as, the school years to come. The sound installation will remain intact (with some need for repair throughout the years) and can be accessed by students during the school year, summer, and after school programs. The garden and sound installation will also benefit the entire campus by adding a natural element to the building.

Describe the Students

The Pre-K program at Maximo Elementary is composed of three classrooms; a 3-year old Blended ESE class and two VPK Blended ESE classrooms. The blended ESE program allows for the district to enroll students who are typically developing along with students who have a special need. This programs blends students of varying abilities, provides special services, and works on preparing students for Kindergarten. Maximo is also a Title 1 school where the staff is working hard to provide students with additional support to succeed academically and socially.
