Goal

What will be done with my students

Beyond the Boundaries of the Sea of Learning is a project designed to provide resources for the special education unit of a general education school. Financial backing is being sought to fund Service Learning opportunities for the self-contained exceptional education classrooms. The money will be spread among all realms of servicing students with special needs, going to: staff and student training, curriculum materials, technology, equipment and community outreach. This project will be carried out through collaborative efforts of school staff, community members including parents, local business members, other nonprofit organizations and volunteers. The project will further our mission of “developing tomorrow’s leaders today”.

Benefits to my students

The students will develop an understanding of what it means to provide service to their community. Social skills will be developed and skills necessary to become productive members of society will be fostered.

Describe the Students

These are students of the Supported Varying Exceptionalities Unit, which is two special education classrooms for students being taught on access points. There are 24 children from all elementary school grades and each at different developmental levels. The students all have significant intellectual disabilities and language deficits as well as other impairments. Other disabilities include sensory or physical impairments including sensory integration disorders, deaf, blind, and autistic and cerebral palsy.

Budget Narrative

This project will use funds to train educators on service learning techniques. It will purchase materials for beautification efforts on our school campus and resources for extending beyond our school grounds to keep the area around the school litter free. The balance of the grant will pay for excursion opportunities, allowing the children to apply service learning techniques within the community.
