Goal

My goal is to engage students in hands-on, independent projects through the use of iPads and related apps in order to increase their skills in literacy, math, and modern technology.

What will be done with my students

Throughout the school year, students will work both independently and in small groups with the iPads on a variety of projects. For example, students will publish their own writing using photos and voice recording in Book Creator so they may share it with other students and their own families. Students will also engage with the Tellagami app to record their voices while reading to both reflect upon and improve fluency. In math, I plan to use QR codes to create a "scavenger hunt" type activity where students travel around the room "hunting" for and solving a variety of math problems.

Benefits to my students

By having 2 classroom iPads, I can engage up to 6 students at a time with this technology: 2 students working on their own iPad at a center at one time, 2 partnerships working at one time, or even a group of 3 collaborating on an activity at one time. For all students, iPad technology is highly engaging and is significantly more user-friendly to a 5-year-old compared to a laptop. For many of my struggling students, publishing their work on an iPad can also serve as a celebration/reward for the hard work they do every day in reading and writing.

Describe the Students

My class of 17 Kindergarten students has a diverse range of ability levels, interests, family and cultural backgrounds, and personalities. Students range from gifted to on-grade-level to beginning progress related to academic standards.
