Each year my journalism students plan a magazine. After they determine a theme, they research various topics that fit that theme, interview people, write and edit articles. It takes them months of hard work, but there is always a black cloud over their heads because our funding is always in question. The school does not have the money to pay for the printing of the magazine which is designed by Dixie's graphic arts students as a collaborative project. Please note our magazine has received Gold and Silver medalist ratings from Columbia University!

Goal

What will be done with my students

My journalism students have already selected this year's theme--Diversity. They have also each selected a topic to research. Some of the topics are: students with disabilities who compete in the Special Olympics, multiracial students who don't know where they fit in, colorism, deafness, mental illness (particularly eating disorders), various religions (with a spotlight on a female Muslim student), and more.
Each student must research their topic, interview multiple people (both students and adults). They put in hours outside of school to observe their subjects, spending time in order to write "a day in the life" type of article.
The articles are not "newsy." They are narrative journalism and tend to be at least two full pages. Students gather to workshop their articles with each other. After critiques, they have an opportunity for revision before the articles are all sent through our editorial staff (the higher level journalists).
Once the articles are complete they are sent to the Graphic Arts department. Then proofs are sent back to my class for final proofreading and approval. 

 

Benefits to my students

Wow....the benefits are incredible! These students are learning to gather information. Analyze it. Figure out how to intertwine it with the personal narratives they want to tell in a way that is engaging for the reader. They learn to be responsible and understand that if one of them does not do their job, the others suffer for it. They know the meaning of a deadline and that in the real world their job depends on them meeting it with a quality product. They know they cannot throw something together at the last minute. If we are pressed for space, which definitely happens, only the best articles get published.  

 

Describe the Students

My students run the gamut. Dixie is a low socioeconomic school. I have high performing Cambridge students. I have students who joined the class because they were once in my remedial reading class and liked me. Funny, but those kids have learned to love to write and, guess what, their reading improved! Funny how that works, right?  

 

Budget Narrative

We generally have to use the print shop within Pinellas County Schools and the charge for printing 250 copies of a quality magazine (80 lb paper, high gloss, very professional looking) is almost $2,000. I have $600 in my account so $1,500 will help us cover this year's costs.
