My goal is to provide inspiration to young writers through visual images and technology. Staring at a blank piece of paper and being told to write can be very intimidating, frustrating and challenging to students who are five and six years old. My goal is to create an "Inspiration Journal" for each student that will consist of pictures, drawings, or visual images that are related to the experiences of their lives. These images will provide the students with ideas to stimulate writing personal narratives.

Goal

My goal is to provide inspiration to young writers through visual images and technology. Staring at a blank piece of paper and being told to write can be very intimidating, frustrating and challenging to students who are five and six years old. My goal is to create an "Inspiration Journal" for each student that will consist of pictures, drawings, or visual images that are related to the experiences of their lives. These images will provide the students with ideas to stimulate writing personal narratives.

What will be done with my students

At the beginning of the year, students are introduced to the writing process by drawing, labeling, and eventually writing about events that happened in their own lives. Many times, students have difficulty relating personal experiences to writing a personal narrative. Each personal "Inspiration Journal" will consist of photographs that families provide of their child's experiences. There is no experience that is too big or too small. Experiences can include family trips, meals, visits with relatives, birthday parties, bike riding, sporting events, trips to the park, etc. Pictures can be emailed directly to me so I can print them and place them in the student's journal. When it comes time to write, students can look through their journals to search for ideas and inspiration they can write about. Students can also share their journals with classmates to compare shared experiences. Students will also learn to become photojournalists by using a digital camera during our school day to capture moments throughout our day which will make up a Class "Inspiration Journal."

Benefits to my students

Students will learn that personal experiences make excellent stories. The personal and classroom journals will provide a tool for students to use when they are searching for ideas to write about. Students who learn to love writing will become better writers. My goal is for students to develop a love of writing which will carry them through the foundations that begin in Kindergarten and carry on throughout their academic career.
