Goal

The goal of this grant is to assist students in recognizing numbers 1-30 in order and individually. In addition students will developing an understanding of the Gregorian Calendar, including months of the year, day of the week and special holidays.

What will be done with my students

Students will sit daily on the Math Calendar Carpet and place the number markers indicating the day of the week in the appropriate box. We will explore with this carpet how the calendar works as well as learning numbers 1-30. Once we complete the task whole group, students will be directed to go back to their seat to complete their individual calendar journals. This will include daily calendar and weather tracking as well as kindergarten appropriate writing paper where they will further develop their Language Arts and writing skills.

Standards Addressed include:
LAFS.K.L.1.1 – Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing and speaking.

LAFS.K.L.1.2 – Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.

MAFS.K.CC.1.2 – Count forward beginning from a given number in a known sequence.

MAFS.K.CC.1.3 – Read and write numerals from 0-20. Represents a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20.

Benefits to my students

Having a manipulative carpet will allow students to interact with the calendar at an advanced level. They will not just be writing a number in a box, they will have the opportunity daily to build the current months calendar. For my ESOL students, a manipulative such as this is priceless. Most of these students will not even know what a calendar is let alone how to read one when they enter kindergarten. It is my goal to have each student have a firm understanding of the workings of the calendar by the end of December. Having a calendar that they can move around and manipulate with their own hands will greatly assist in this process.

During individual conferences, I will use the journal entries to reflect with the students on their progress. They will use the journal to write their name, color words, sight words and eventually full sentences.

Describe the Students

Eisenhower Elementary School is located in a low socio-economic area of Clearwater Florida. The majority of the housing in this area is low income apartment complexes. In this year's school ratings, Eisenhower Elementary School received a C.

The Kindergarten students I teach at Eisenhower Elementary School present themselves with multiple barriers to learning. Not only are their families economically disadvantaged, more that 50% of the students are in a single parent home. Statistics show that only 40% of the incoming Kindergarten students will graduate from 5th grade at Eisenhower Elementary. We have a very transient population making it difficult for these students to build community and connections with teachers and fellow students.

In addition, Eisenhower typically has a very high ESOL student population. In Kindergarten, this poses additional struggles for students as they are often afraid to speak because they are embarrassed or do not want to say something that is wrong.

The amazing part of my experience with these Kindergarten students is that they are generally great kids who really want to learn. They display effort and heart in the learning process. This allows me to teach and help them develop daily into great students and amazing little people.
