Goal

The goal of this grant is to engage students in collaborative critical and creative thinking activities while introducing them to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) concepts related to computer science, programming, and robotics.

What will be done with my students

This grant will fund two different STEM programs. One program will be an after school We Do STEM club for second graders. The club will be held in 10 week sessions after school and will serve approximately 40 second graders throughout the year. The second program will be held within our School-wide Enrichment Model. This model sets aside an enrichment time period within the school week that allows students to explore areas of interest. Within the School-wide enrichment model, the We Do STEM grant will serve approximately 40 students among grades 3-5 throughout the school year.
The We Do STEM club and enrichment classes will both work on the same activities. Students in these groups will increase their knowledge of computer science and programming, while applying math and science content to build and program robotic models using the Lego Education We Do STEM classroom kits. These kits will allow students to work collaboratively and creatively to construct working models using motors, motion sensors, and various Lego blocks. Once the models are constructed, students will learn how to program the models to accomplish tasks using Lego We Do software. Students will program models like dancing birds, a soccer goalkeeper, and jungle creatures to move and react to different stimuli. We plan to share our Lego WE Do model projects at a STEM celebration for parents and school community members. We will continue our STEM club and enrichment activities by using these materials with other students in subsequent school years.

Benefits to my students

This project will benefit our students because it will challenge their thinking while introducing them to science concepts outside of the regular education curriculum. It will enable them to work on life skills such as effective problem solving, collaboration, communication, and presentation skills while allowing them to be exposed to activities related to a potential career path in a STEM field. Lastly, by participating in the club or the enrichment classes, students in our two diverse populations will learn to work together and appreciate each others talents, as they learn new content and face challenges together.

Describe the Students

Our school is a Title 1 magnet school. We have a diverse population of students. Our magnet program students are enrolled in a full time gifted program, so this project will provide them with opportunities for advanced intellectual stimulation and challenge. Many of our non-magnet students are from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and this club will be an avenue through which they can experience enriched learning activities while being exposed to new concepts and career paths.

Budget Narrative

Our budget will purchase the Lego Education We Do STEM classroom pack. This consists of Lego We Do Construction Kits, activity guides, and software needed to allow our students to build robotic models and apply programming skills to activate them.
