Goal

Learning & Burning has three goals: 1- to encourage student engagement with social studies, science and language arts content; 2 - to increase weekly physical activity of students; and 3 - to build listening stamina.

What will be done with my students

For each lesson, students will be given a pre-assessment. After the pre-assessment, students will participate in a variety of activities to review key vocabulary. Following the vocabulary tasks the students will be given their own individual MP3 player with a pre-recorded podcast. Students will be given a purpose for listening and then will proceed outside to LEARN & BURN. Students will walk approximately 15 minutes while listening to the selected lesson. After students complete the invigorating walking portion of the lesson it will be time for discussion. Students will be prompted to share what they learned through oral and written activities. Finally, the students will complete a 10 question comprehension post-assessment. Students will keep a record of their growth within a data folder and will be asked to review the results, set goals for themselves and development an action plan for improvement. Folders will also include their physical fitness data and goals for improvement in this area.

Benefits to my students

According to the Florida Department of Education, “Exercise improves alertness and memory and can also improve mood, stimulate creativity, reduce anxiety, and provide an outlet for anger or aggression”. Learning & Burning provides all students with an opportunity to be physically active while improving cognitive function. In addition, for those students that require opportunities to “move” throughout the day, this project allows for this to happen without the loss of instruction because movement is tied directly to instruction. Academically students can build their listening skills and stamina because they will not have a paper version of the text to refer back to when completing the tasks associated with the podcast. Students will be required to make adjustments to how they have learned information in the past thus increasing their levels of excitement and interest. Learning & Burning gives students a different way of interacting with the content plus the benefits of physical exercise.

Describe the Students

Students who will be participating in the project are in 5th grade. The targeted students include students with learning disabilities, below grade level readers, on grade level readers, above grade level readers, readers new to the English language, and includes economically disadvantaged and at risk students.
