Goal

To restart the Mount Vernon Book Boxing program. The Book Boxing program builds reading stamina, deep reading comprehension, academic motivation, school spirit and a sense of positive academic culture.

What will be done with my students

Students will read all the books on the 2015-2016 Sunshine State Young Readers list. When they finish the books. they will use a variety of resources to prove their knowledge of all the books. Once teams are chosen, students meet to on a regular basis to practice for the county wide Book Boxing tournaments. Tournaments take place in the spring. Students who are not chosen for the team are used as "trainers" to assist Book Boxers.

The students who read for Book Boxing learn to read and comprehend on a much deeper level. This is an important skill for reading higher level academic text.

These students will also provide the momentum and excitement needed to maintain the Book Boxing program for the next school year.

Benefits to my students

The "on grade level or higher" readers are often overlooked in elementary schools who have a high number of students requiring reading interventions. These readers can quickly lose motivation and fail to make adequate reading progress. The Book Boxing program provides a great deal of motivation for those readers to stretch their thinking and become the best readers possible. The program also has a number of secondary benefits, such as motivation of struggling readers, building of a postive academic culture, and inspiring school spirit.

We are requesting a set of books for each classroom, grades 3-5, and 3 sets for our Media Center. This will ensure every student has access to these books and to particiation in Battle of the Books. The purchase of these books will also benefit future students by providing quality literature for classroom libraries and the school library.

Describe the Students

The targeted audience for Book Boxing are the "On Grade Level or Higher" readers. Secondary audience will be students reading slightly below grade level.

Budget Narrative

The budget is an average from a variety of distributors of the Sunshine State Young Readers. The pricing is for 15 sets. One set for each 3-5 classroom and 3 sets for the school media center.
