My goal is to use school supplies to help students in need increase their proficiency in mathematics by creating interactive math journals.

Many of the students in my classroom last year lacked the money to purchase the needed materials for interactive math journals.

I would use the money to purchase composition books, glue sticks, construction paper, notebook paper, pocket folders, flash cards and a pencil sharpener.

Goal

My goal is to use school supplies to help students in need increase their proficiency in mathematics by creating interactive math journals.

Many of the students in my classroom last year lacked the money to purchase the needed materials for interactive math journals.

I would use the money to purchase composition books, glue sticks, construction paper, notebook paper, pocket folders, flash cards and a pencil sharpener.

What will be done with my students

I will use the materials to create interactive math journals to help students stretch their thinking and make sense of problems. Math journals allow students to examine, express, and keep track of their reasoning. I will use the journals to help lead classroom discussions, where students will explain their thinking. I will read their math journals daily to evaluate their progress and respond to their written work.

Benefits to my students

Math journals increase student understanding of the math standards necessary to be successful in third grade. Students use their journals to record solutions to math problems, along with the strategy and thought process used to arrive at the solution. The benefit for the teacher is that I can review their journals and see what my student understands, how they approach concepts and what misconceptions that student may have. I will use their journals to help drive classroom instruction.

Describe the Students

73% of my class would qualify for free or reduced lunch. Out of the 36 students I had only 11 provided the needed materials to create math journals. I had to provide materials for the other 25 students.

Budget Narrative

I will use the $ to purchase the school supplies from Pinellas County Schools Warehouse.
