Goal

To be able to repair a classroom's worth of broken ipads in order to maintain our one-to-one ipad initiative (rather than eliminating our one-to-one initiative because we do not have enough working ipads for each student nor enough funds to repair them through district-approved venues.)

What will be done with my students

1. Students will be able to continue to have an ipad that can be taken home to extend the learning beyond the classroom due to our one-to-one initiative. These ipad2's are used for both reading and math skills as well as logic and educational games at home.
2. Students will be able to take advantage of individualized apps that the district has funded that allow teachers to track progress and offer feedback for continuing assistance to our students.
3. High school students interested in technology will be able to get service credits for assisting with this project.

On the surface, this may seem not to be stduent-centered; it reality it is VERY student-centered. It allows us to maintain our ipad initiative that is unique in Pinellas County. This initiative, which is in danger of being disbanded, has increased performance, motivation, and parental involvement; we just need a little boost to keep it going.

Benefits to my students

This will benefit the entire school because we have worked tirelessly to embed technology in every aspect of our curriculum to give high poverty students a leg-up in their learning. They often do not have technology at home and our initiative has increased time on task and parental involvement by allowing students to take home their ipads with educational apps to use evenings and weekends. There are educational apps on every ipad that do not require internet. Without funds to be able to make repairs, we are in danger of having to disband this project. With children, accidents happen. The most common issue is a cracked screen. Once our ipad2's are out of warranty, a retail repair becomes impossible for our school or our parents to afford. District policy will not allow us to use district funds for the less expensive repair kits. This project will allow us to get the kits at the least expensive price, use technology-savy high schoolers to assist with the work of doing the repairs, and keep the ipads in the hands of students. For example, the cost to repair one ipad with a district approved vendor is $140.00. To purchase the repair kit through Amazon is $20.00--a seven-fold benefit.

Describe the Students

We are a 100% free-and-reduced lunch, Title I school serving a large number of high-poverty urban students. We have worked to obtain this technology, involve parents and train teachers. We even partner with Brighthouse to offer low cost internet to our neediest families, and extend the learning day with an ipad for each student to be able to take home. Accidents happen at school and at home. Even if students damage the ipads at home and the parents are fined, it is unusual to see any of the money requested as many parents simply do not have it. We have three classrooms of students with emotional and behavioral disabilities, and some of the damage stems from these students. However, they are often the students who need the individualized learning that technology can provide the most!

Budget Narrative

Amazon is half the price of local vendors for the same touch screen replacement kit, and the tool kits can be used over and over. Two tool kits were requested so multiple people can work on mulitiple ipads at the same time. This $425.00 request will repair 20 ipads, enough for an entire class. to do the same via district venues would be $2800.00. The kits have free shipping but the tools will have a shipping charge. If I am allowed to purchase them, I have Amazon Prime, so there will be no shipping fee assessed. Thank you in advance for considering this project.
