My goal is to help make reading fun for my students by going through novels and following along with the 6th grade themes for the year. I want to instill a love for reading in my students while taking them on a journey through horror and mystery. I have chosen the books Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief for the Greek Mythology unit and The Ghost of Graylock for the horror/mystery unit. As a 6th grade team we are trying to create a unit together using these books. I have had great success using novels for learning with my students in the past.

Goal

My goal is to help make reading fun for my students by going through novels and following along with the 6th grade themes for the year. I want to instill a love for reading in my students while taking them on a journey through horror and mystery. I have chosen the books Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief for the Greek Mythology unit and The Ghost of Graylock for the horror/mystery unit. As a 6th grade team we are trying to create a unit together using these books. I have had great success using novels for learning with my students in the past.

What will be done with my students

We will be reading the novels while using an interactive notebook for learning. The students will be able to share their thoughts on a daily basis while also learning critical reading skills such as characterization, plot, and theme. Students will work in collaborative groups to try to figure out the mystery of the Ghost of Graylock. Students will have a chance to be creative while using their critical thinking skills.

Benefits to my students

There are many benefits to reading a novel as a class. Many of my students have never read a complete novel by themselves, so this helps them to build a sense of accomplishment. By using interactive notebooks, students can make reading interesting and fun. I hope to establish a new desire for reading in each of my students.

Describe the Students

Half of my 6th grade students are reading on grade level. The other half of 6th grade is performing below grade level. They are struggling readers who performed below a level 3 on the FCAT last year. I also teach 7th grade students that are performing below grade level as well. They showed interest in wanting to read a novel as a class, whereas before they never showed an interest.

Budget Narrative

I researched prices and found that Scholastic sold the books the cheapest for teachers. I included shipping in each of the prices and the price is for a class set of 25 books.
