Goal

The goal of this grant is to develop a Guided Reading Assessment process which will target individual student need in order to advance student reading skills.

What will be done with my students

Five to six times throughout the year, students need to complete a Running Record in order for the teacher to place them in an accurate and challenging guided reading small group. Having multiple texts available, at all reading levels (A-G), for students to select from will alleviate the current satiation in my classroom. Currently I have 1-2 tests available for Running Record reading. Students are often reading the same test multiple times, which may lead to inaccurate Running Record scores due to text memorization. Having 4 books with accompanying comprehension questions in both fiction and non-fiction will provide the students with options and a clearer picture of their reading skills for the teacher.

Benefits to my students

Students in my class currently have limited/no choice in the Running Record book they can read/understand in order to advance to the next reading level. In addition, all current texts are fiction stories. This Scholastic Next Step Guided Reading Assessment kit provides all materials for the following assessment steps:
1) Reading Interest Inventory - Discovering Reading Habits and Preferences
2) Developmental Word Knowledge Inventory - Pinpointing Student's Word Knowledge
3) Listening Comprehension Assessment - Understanding Student's Higher-Level Thinking
4) Reading Assessment Conference - Determining Children's Instructional Level
Completing this four-step assessment process will allow me to place students into small-guided reading groups with meaning and purpose. I will have a greater sense of individual student need and will have the ability to pinpoint lessons to advance student skills. This process combine with the Jan Richardson Guided Reading process will lead to greater student reading success.

Describe the Students

Eisenhower Elementary School is located in a low socio-economic area of Clearwater Florida. The majority of the housing in this area is low income apartment complexes. In this year's school ratings, Eisenhower Elementary School received a C.

The Kindergarten students I teach at Eisenhower Elementary School present themselves with multiple barriers to learning. Not only are their families economically disadvantaged, more that 50% of the students are in a single parent home. Statistics show that only 40% of the incoming Kindergarten students will graduate from 5th grade at Eisenhower Elementary. We have a very transient population making it difficult for these students to build community and connections with teachers and fellow students.

In addition, Eisenhower typically has a very high ESOL student population. In Kindergarten, this poses additional struggles for students as they are often afraid to speak because they are embarrassed or do not want to say something wrong.

The amazing part of my experience with these Kindergarten students is that they are generally great kids who really want to learn. They display effort and heart in the learning process. This allows me to teach and help them develop daily into great students and amazing little people.
