Goal

Students will become even more proactive in advocating for themselves in social situations and manage their feelings in a healthy way through the use of different social stories and interactive activity kits. Students will be learn in a fun and engaging way about how to deal with social situations.

What will be done with my students

Students will use the social stories to relate to what they may be dealing with in their own lives and then use the activities that go along with the stories to analyze their own behaviors and how they can overcome some of their own triggers for behaviors. The class will focus on specific social situations such as how to cool down and how to what they say and do affects how others feel.

Benefits to my students

The first grant for the set of social stories was such a hit with the students that there are several more stories that they have shown interest in wanting for the classroom library. The students will have a clear visual through the use of engaging social stories to relate how they feel to the characters in the story. They will learn that they aren't alone in how they feel and learn how to deal with their feelings in a healthy and constructive way. Because the students are mixed throughout the day in different classes with mainstream peers they will be able to use these strategies to help them understand pragmatics of social settings. The will be able to follow through on their new skills through activities provided within the activity kits to further imbed the lessons.

Describe the Students

The students are all on the Autism Spectrum. Some of the students are gifted and others are on Special Diplomas. The students also have other disorders such as EBD, ADHD and ODD. They are mixed in self-contained classes as well as general mainstream classes. The students range from kindergarten level in other classes all the way to 4th grade. The stories are varying enough that they are simple and clear and are enjoyed by all the students despite grade level and ability level.

Budget Narrative

The budget will cover a wide range of social story books and activities included in teacher kits as well as shipping costs.
