Goal

To provide my low income students with a STEM experience they will remember as a motivation to do well in school as they move to the challenges of middle school.

What will be done with my students

We will go on a field trip to the Tampa Museum of Science and Industry, including the special educational program Scene of the Crime. Currently the museum is offering a free teacher night where I can personally prepare a "scavenger hunt" assignment to help the students connect the classroom learning to the activities at the museum.

In addition, this would be the cumulating "5th grade trip" that this group of students would otherwise be unable to afford.

Benefits to my students

The students can see applications for allof the science subjects they have been studying. The specific program, Scene of the Crime, is a motivating one that reequires them to use scientific sills to analyze clues to determine the guilty culprit. This is a great trip because it demonstrates value in all areas of science--life, earth, and physical--in a very motivating way.

Describe the Students

Our schools and my students are 100% free lunch, which indicates a high level of poverty. In addition, in math, reading and science, less than 25% of my students test at proficient (although better than at the beginning of the year). Research shows that this makes them candidates for becoming discouraged and dropping out. Real world examples are very important for my students to see the value in continuing to stay in school and work hard.

Budget Narrative

The discounted cost to the school for the entrance and the program is $10.00. The bus provided by MOSI will have to be specificially determined but are estimated at $500 total.
