Goal

We are a brand new school and my goal is to build my Civics classroom library and supplemental resources.

What will be done with my students

Students will be provided with a classroom library of books that tie into our Civics curriculum. The library would work well for independent and small group reading and research on topics covered throughout the year.

Also, our school has a focus on engineering and STEM. Students would be provided with several design/building projects that tie into our Civics curriculum but also are cross curricular with their other subjects emphasizing the design and building of the structures.

Benefits to my students

The classroom library/design projects will benefit my students by providing them with more resources in learning/studying Civics.

Some of the areas I would like to purchase books for include-political parties, landmark Supreme Court cases, the Presidents, forms of government, etc... All of these resources will also be covered in 8th grade U.S. History the following year.

The building projects I would like to purchase for small groups include the design of the White House, U.S. Capitol and the United Nations (for our Model U.N. unit at the end of the year). Students will work together to design and build these structures as we learn about them.

Describe the Students

My students are of mixed abilities. I have ESE and Gifted students, and levels 2-5 for FCAT Reading. We are a brand new school and my students are in an engineering program, so I try to incorporate building and technology into my curriculum whenever possible. My students also are avid readers so I would like to build my classroom library.

Budget Narrative

The budget includes costs of many Civics student books for my classroom library. In addition, the budget covers the costs of the architecture kits for my students to design and build. A benefit is they can be taken apart and built each year.
