Goal

To instill into some of our brightest students a love of all things science and to simultaneously extend these students' knowledge beyond the typical standards for their grade levels.

What will be done with my students

Gifted students in grades K-5 at two different schools (Woodlawn and Campbell Park) will participate in 4 different science experiments involving hands-on science kits purchased from Miracles of Science (www.miraclesofscience.info). All 4 experiments that come in this kit are centered on physical and chemical science. There will be a teacher-made pre- and post- test to 1.) see how much of the information infused into the activities is transferred to general science knowledge and 2.) to assess students' interest in STEM subjects before and after the activities. Students will debrief each activity with the teacher in a manner appropriate for the grade level taught.

Benefits to my students

The students will have a much clearer understanding of physical and chemical change, their causes, and the results. They will apply this to other relevant situations where this could happen/ influence events.
Approximately 2/3 of the students are female, and research tells us they need this extra boost to keep the STEM subjects in the forefront when considering a career. At the same time, we have learned that gifted boys are often disengaged from much of the school day, either from boredom or a lack of belonging. This will assist with engaging both groups.
Please also see the description below about my students and their special need for extra hands-on, engaging, relevant experiences in school.

Describe the Students

As a teacher of gifted students, I work at two very low income schools. both of these schools have 100% free and reduced lunch, a common measure of poverty. Even though I worked all last year to test nearly every student in both schools, there are only 12-15 students in BOTH SCHOOLS TOTAL who qualify for my program (enrollment varies in high transience schools).
Often these students are not adequately motivated or challenged either in the classroom or in their home environment. A great deal of time is spent being sure that all students have the basic skills that many lack in both of my schools. Even though it is not supposed to, sometimes, science gets "shorted".
Also, my gifted students have not had the experiences that many other gifted students have often had. It is more difficult for them to grasp many of the abstract concepts taught in school. For example, most have not baked cake at home, so they have not seen the effect of stirring or the effect of heat upon cake batter, or talked with parents about what happens to boiling water.
The requested kits with 4 separate and different activities are relatively inexpensive for the amount of positive and engaging challenges that they will provide my students in science.

Budget Narrative

I have arranged for the company to send the items with free shipping if we order 20. While I might have a couple extra this way, I can use them with a different class in small groups. The cost of the 20 is the same as 16 plus shipping fees! Everything else (development of the pre- and post- test, cups and miscellaneous supplies needed to carry out the activities)will be provided by me and/or the schools.
The drop down only allowed me to select one school, so I hope it is clear that my time is split between two schools and this would provide every gifted student in both schools with a personal kit.
