Goal

To support high achieving students, motivate reluctant readers, and to help expose all my students to reading and comprehending text from a technological platform.

What will be done with my students

Most of the Kindles will be assigned to students to use during our reading intervention time as a source of enrichment for their book club books. The remaining Kindles will be available for checkout through me that I will use as tools to motivate reluctant readers or as rewards for my hard workers.

Benefits to my students

The possibilities are endless with having these kindles in my classroom because I will have access to an entire library with all levels of books at my fingertips. However, I would love to have these Kindles in my classroom for three main reasons:

1. Enrichment – My school has an extremely high number of ESE and ESOL students who constantly receive additional supports and special programs to help with their learning. My fear is that we focus so much on these “low performers” and are hard pressed to find enrichment opportunities for students who are meeting or beyond reading expectations. I believe that we need to continue to push these students to go beyond grade level expectations and provide them with opportunities to enhance their education. By organizing book clubs on Kindles I will have access to higher level books for my enrichment students. They will become self-directed learners as they work together to read through and discuss the challenging texts they are reading. It will help improve communication skills and grow their reading abilities with peer to peer support.

2. Motivation – The students we have in our schools today are growing up as digital natives. They come to school equipped with the ability to use most technology better than the teachers. For reluctant or "lazy" readers I believe having the Kindle as an option to choose for their independent reading time will peak their interest more than the exact same book found in paperback in my classroom library. My goal as a teacher is to instill a love of reading in all my students. Although I personally don’t think anything beats holding a real book in your hands, I understand that many students respond better to what they know best…. Which is technology. I want to do whatever it takes to get my students interested in reading and I believe having Kindles as an option will help motivate my students to read.

3. Exposure to “online” texts – With so many of our county and state assessments moving towards computer based testing it is important for my students to be comfortable reading and comprehending texts and multimedia resources off of any device or platform. Although Kindles are designed to mimic the experience of a paperback book, it is definitely a different experience than having a printout of text in front of you. My hope is that by constantly offering different platforms for students to read from will ease the transition into computer based testing and allow them to comfortably and confidently read their text no matter if it’s on a computer, ipad, from a book or a printout.

Describe the Students

I have a wonderful mix of students including ESE, Low Performers, High Performers and Gifted.

Budget Narrative

The standard Kindle from Amazon is $85.00 including taxes and free shipping. I would love to have 12 Kindles in my classroom so that I can organize students into two groups of six, three groups of four, four groups or three OR different sized groups with some Kindles leftover to use with my other students.

In addition, I am hoping to download a variety of books onto the Kindles in all different reading levels. Books downloaded will depend on the number of students in that group and the appropriate leveled book to match them.
