Goal

My goal is to incorporate STEM and build literacy in my 6th grade Ancient Civilizations classes through a supplemental resource, the novel "Archimedes and the Door of Science", by Jeanne Bendick.

What will be done with my students

The novel will be a supplemental resource when teaching our Ancient Greece unit. The novel provides many tangible examples of achievements of Ancient Greece and Archmides, a scientist.

Benefits to my students

This cross-curricular novel will connect to math, science, as well as the engineering principals while promoting literacy in world history.

Describe the Students

My sixth grade students are of mixed abilities including gifted, ESE, and I have one ESOL student. Their FCAT reading levels range from Levels 2-5. My students have a high interest in STEM and hands-on learning and if this novel is purchased, I will be able to utilize the examples and incorporate hands-on STEM activities.

Budget Narrative

I am requesting 30 copies of the novel, which range from $9-12 per copy plus shipping. It is not easily available so I may need to purchase from multiple sites. I have 22 students who will use it in class and would like extra copies that I can check out for absent students or readers who may need to re-read or review a chapter or class activity.
