Goal

The goal of this project is to increase engagement among General Chemistry students by incorporating STEM labs on a weekly basis.

What will be done with my students

Students will perform basic laboratory skills using equipment on a regular basis. Students will apply mathematical skills in calculating and measuring chemicals for performing laboratory techniques such as filtration, distillation, pH testing and chromatography. Students will relate chemistry concepts to real world issues such as carbon dioxide emissions and how it relates to global climate change and shifts in water pH. Students will simulate how chemical tests are used in varying industries.

Benefits to my students

Students will be able to apply concepts in class using technology and mathematics. Students will also be required to provide a written report on laboratory experiments, incorporating common core standards of being able to follow a procedure, provide mathematical evidence and formulating and testing hypotheses. Students will improve their writing skills in the sciences, incorporating multiple subject areas in their written report. Incorporating labs is expected to help increase student math and reading scores.

Describe the Students

My general chemistry class currently has 35% students that have scored in the lower 35% FCAT math and 40% of students in Low 34% FCAT reading. 10% of students are ESE, 3% of students have a 504 plan, and 3% of students are English Language Learners.
