My goal for this project is to increase the number of devices I have available to my students, adding one iPad. This would allow for me to have one device for every pair of students in my class. My BIG DREAM is to have a 1:1 ration of devices per student - I am almost half way there!

Goal

My goal for this project is to increase the number of devices I have available to my students, adding one iPad. This would allow for me to have one device for every pair of students in my class. My BIG DREAM is to have a 1:1 ration of devices per student - I am almost half way there!

What will be done with my students

My students and I use our iPads daily in small group, partnerships, and in independent work. The list is quite long of what we have begun accomplishing on this technology integration journey, and we still have a long way to go. Here are are just a few of the many activities my students are able to accomplish while utilizing the iPads.
1) Using programs and apps like Socrative and Nearpod my students are able to interact with knowledge during a lesson. They respond using their iPads allowing me to quickly assess my students current level of understanding.
2) We use apps titled Shadow Puppet Edu, Halftone 2, and 30Hands to publish digital stories.
3) We use Showbie to turn in digital projects (each child building a digital portfolio), and as a place to have conversations and reflections outside of the classroom. Extending our learning beyond the school day.
4) My students love to app smash using Google Earth, Skitch, Pic Collage and Thinglink to showcase their learning.
5) We have begun using iMovie to produce debate style videos after working on opinion writing modules.
6) Students use Book Creator to create Social Studies, Science, and literature journals - adding video, voice, diagrams and photographs to their own writing.

These are just a small sample of the opportunities iPads in the classroom are allowing my students to explore. We hope to gain access to additional technology through this grant.

Benefits to my students

The benefit of integrating daily technology into my ELA classroom has far surpassed anything I could have imagined. While my ultimate goal will be to provide one device for each child, I started the year with one iPad and have acquired 9 others so far. The list of what my students accomplish with the technology grows everyday. Surveys I have conducted this year with my students shows the use of technology to read and research, to collaborate with others and to create products showcasing their learning makes school more "exciting and meaningful".
Additionally, parents have made multiple comments about their child's enthusiasm for school has skyrocketed because they truly enjoy coming to school everyday and "writing has become a fun activity".
Finally, the level of engagement, especially with boys has increased when iPads are utilized to interact during lesson.

Describe the Students

At times, my classroom may look like a three ring circus; balancing my advanced learners, on grade level students, and children struggling to keep up with the demands of our new standards. Through all of this, we find time to laugh while learning and growing together.

My students come from a wide range of backgrounds ranging from middle class families to families who struggle to provide a nutritional meal for their children to students who speak little or no English. Within my class, I am fortunate to have students who are high achieving which brings about the challenge of raising the rigor and providing materials necessary to push their learning to new heights.

On the other hand, I have several students who are not performing at grade level. My class needs the technology resources to meet these diverse needs. The goal is to utilize technology to allow all students to reach their maximum potential and become lifelong learners.
