Goal

The mission of Girlfriends is to provide young ladies with the resources, tools and guidance necessary to encourage self-discipline, positive behavior, and cultivate high self-esteem and self-reliance.

What will be done with my students

Girlfriends meets twice a month before school. One meeting a month focuses on a community female speaker encouraging our girls to work hard academically for their future. The other meeting is an activity to build social skills and self-esteem.

We hope to take field trips to expose our girls to community events, businesses, art, and science. This year we hope to expose our girls to art by attending the Seminole High production of High School Musical, encourage their social skills with a trip to Olive Garden for an etiquette class and instill a love for science by taking a trip to Clam Bayou to work with students from USF.

Parents will be encouraged to work with their daughters on being responsible, on time, and respectful. We will have three parent events to encourage parents to active participants. The first parent meeting was the induction ceremony. We plan to have a fashion show for our girls to show off their style and a dinner for the girls to serve their parents.

Benefits to my students

Our girls will benefit from being in Girlfriends by developing social skills, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills. It will help to develop their self-esteem by interacting with their peers as well as adult mentors. Field trips will provide the opportunity to enhance cultural awareness by going out and interacting with the community. Each girl will be encouraged to be the best they can be not only now but in the future.

Describe the Students

Currently we have 45 fourth and fifth grade girls from all different ethnic backgrounds. Many of our girls are on free or reduced lunch and struggle academically. Some of our students may not struggle academically or with poverty but need the encouragement in the social field to empower them. These girls working together truly make up the world we live in.
